To practice as a pharmacist in Saudi Arabia, international graduates must obtain licensure and professional classification from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). The process is centrally managed through the SCFHS’s online portal, Mumaris Plus, and culminates in passing the national licensing examination.
Phase 1: Professional Classification and Verification
This phase establishes the authenticity and equivalency of your academic and professional credentials.
Meet Initial Eligibility and Gather Documents
Candidates must meet the following general requirements:
- Education: Hold a recognized Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience (Non-Saudis): A minimum of one year of post-qualification experience is typically required for non-Saudis, though this may vary based on the degree type and classification being sought.
- Documentation: Gather essential documents, including the degree certificate, academic transcripts, professional license, Good Standing Certificate (GSC) from your last licensing body, and experience letter(s).
Create a Mumaris Plus Account
Register on the official SCFHS Mumaris Plus electronic portal. This platform is used for all steps: classification, verification, exam scheduling, and final registration. You will upload all gathered documents here.
Submit for DataFlow Verification (PSV)
The SCFHS mandates Primary Source Verification (PSV) of your core documents (degree, license, and experience) through the DataFlow Group.
- Process: After submitting your application on Mumaris Plus, the DataFlow service is initiated through the portal. DataFlow directly contacts the issuing authorities (universities, councils, employers) to confirm the authenticity of your documents.
- Outcome: A positive DataFlow report is essential to move forward. This process can take several weeks or months.
Obtain Professional Classification
Once your documents are verified via DataFlow, the SCFHS reviews your file and grants you a Professional Classification (e.g., Pharmacist, Pharmacist I, or Consultant Pharmacist) based on your qualifications and experience. This is the official recognition of your professional standing.
Phase 2: The Saudi Pharmacist Licensure Examination (SPLE)
Passing the national licensure exam is the mandatory gateway to practice.
Apply for the SPLE
After receiving the Professional Classification, you must apply to sit for the Saudi Pharmacist Licensure Examination (SPLE) through the Mumaris Plus portal.
Receive Scheduling Permit
The SCFHS will issue a Scheduling Permit via email. This permit grants you an eligibility window during which you must book and take the exam.
Prepare for the SPLE
The SPLE is a comprehensive, computer-based assessment.
- Format: The exam typically contains 210 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs).
- Content: The blueprint covers four major areas: Basic Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Social/Behavioral/Administrative Sciences, and Clinical Sciences.
- Passing Score: The current passing score is 536 on a reporting scale of 200–800.
Sit the SPLE Prometric Exam
You must book a test slot at an approved Prometric testing center. The exam is available in numerous international locations as well as within Saudi Arabia.
Receive SPLE Results
Results are not instantaneous and are usually announced within 2–6 weeks after the testing window closes. Candidates who pass the exam receive a certificate of qualification. You are typically allowed up to four attempts per year to pass.
Phase 3: Employment and Final Registration
The final steps involve securing a job and formally registering your license.
Secure an Employment Offer
With your SCFHS Professional Classification and the SPLE passing certificate, you are well-positioned to apply for jobs in hospitals, community pharmacies, or industry in Saudi Arabia. Securing an employment offer is necessary to complete the final registration step.
Complete Professional Registration
Once you have an employer, they will assist you in applying for Professional Registration through the Mumaris Plus system. This process is generally completed after you arrive in the Kingdom and requires documents such as:
- A Letter of Employment Identification (from your new employer).
- A Medical Report (for applicants over 65).
- A valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
Obtain the Final Practice License
Upon successful submission and approval of the final registration, the SCFHS issues your official Professional Practice License. You are now legally authorized to practice as a pharmacist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Maintain and Renew License
The professional registration is typically valid for two years. To maintain your license, you must fulfill requirements for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits for renewal.
